Census Bureau documents the number of individuals living in same-sex households but has not historically identified individuals as gay or lesbian per se. Several other surveys, governmental and non-governmental, have over the years measured sexual orientation, but the largest such study by far has been the Gallup Daily tracking measure instituted in June In this ongoing study, respondents are asked "Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?
As Gallup pointed out in its initial report of LGBT data in , "Exactly who makes up the LGBT community and how this group should be measured is a subject of some debate ," and "There are a number of ways to measure lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientation, and transgender status. Sexual orientation can be assessed by measuring identity as well as sexual behaviors and attractions.
Still, all available estimates of the actual gay and lesbian population in the U. Part of the explanation for the inaccurate estimates of the gay and lesbian population rests with Americans' general unfamiliarity with numbers and demography. Previous research has shown that Americans estimate that a third of the U. Americans with the highest levels of education make the lowest estimates of the gay and lesbian population, underscoring the assumption that part of the reason for the overestimate is a lack of exposure to demographic data.
Younger Americans give higher estimates than those who are older, and women make significantly higher guesses of the gay and lesbian population than men do. Republicans and conservatives are much less likely than others to consider gay and lesbian relations morally acceptable and to favor legalized same-sex marriage, and Republicans provide estimates of the gay and lesbian population that are somewhat lower than those made by other party groups.
Similarly, those who are opposed to legalized same-sex marriage give modestly lower estimates of the gay population than those who favor it. The causality in these relationships could run both ways; attitudes toward gays and lesbians could be conditioned by views of how prevalent they are in the population, or estimates of their prevalence could reflect underlying attitudes toward the group.
Americans perceive that more than one in five Americans are gay or lesbian, far greater than the actual rate as measured by self-reports on Gallup Daily tracking. Some of the overestimation may reflect Americans' lack of knowledge about social statistics and demography, which is supported by Americans' historical tendency to overestimate the prevalence of other subgroups in the U. The overestimation may also reflect prominent media portrayals of gay characters on television and in movies, even as far back as , and perhaps the high visibility of activists who have pushed gay causes, particularly legalizing same-sex marriage.
Still, the estimates of gay and lesbian percentages have been relatively stable compared with those measured in and , even though attitudes about gays and lesbians have changed dramatically over that time. When it became necessary to predict what would happen to the Aids epidemic, it was vital to find out what people actually did with each other.
Surveys started to distinguish between identity what sexual orientation you claim ; attraction who you find sexually attractive ; and behaviour whether you have had same-sex experiences. The numbers for each area turn out to be very different. The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles Natsal is the most reliable source of information on what Britons do in private, and has taken place every 10 years since But there is a clear gradient with age, with a much higher proportion in younger people, particularly in younger women: the percentage for women between 16 and 24 jumps nearly fourfold.
Sexual identity is also now part of official government statistics. But only 0. So is this evidence of bias in the Natsal participants or a sign of reluctance to open up in a general household survey that is largely concerned with mundane matters such as shopping habits? That works out to a total of nearly 1. But, just as in the UK, the routine US National Health Interview Survey NHIS comes up with a lower figure for bisexuality than the dedicated sex surveys: it seems plausible that there is less willingness to acknowledge bisexual identity in routine surveys, whereas those who clearly identify themselves as gay or lesbian are willing to be more upfront.
Same-sex sexual behaviour can come in all degrees of intensity. Respondents are asked about activity at any age, so adolescent fumblings counted. But this is not all just girls kissing girls in imitation of Madonna and Britney Spears; around half report genital contact, and around half of these in the past five years, so that overall nearly one in 20 women report a same-sex partner in the past five years. But has there really been a change, or are women simply more willing to report what they get up to?
Using some neat cross-checking, Natsal reckons that the change between and was partly due to more honest reporting, but the rise in and was all real. And it is clear that there is a lot of experimental activity — roughly, for each woman who has had a recent same-sex partner there are two more of the same age who have had some same-sex contact in their lives, but no partner in the past five years.
Men show a different pattern. However, the picture shows a clear peak of lifetime same-sex experience for men aged around 60, and then a dramatic drop in those around 70, a pattern not seen in women.
History might provide some explanation: men now aged around 60 were teenagers in the liberating 60s, when homosexuality was legalised, while men who are now around 70 grew up when same-sex male behaviour in men was illegal and frequently prosecuted.
Much younger men, meanwhile, would have come to adulthood in the more sober era of HIV. Overall the proportion of people with same-sex experience is far higher than the proportion who identify themselves as gay and bisexual. This must mean that many same-sex contacts are by people who do not consider themselves gay or bisexual. And there is one characteristic that unites female and male same-sex experience: the rates are two to three times higher among those with further education than those with no qualifications.
He died aged 59 in of an Aids-related illness in California. Yet his legacy lives on. Because, if we consider possible transient same-sex behaviour, his rather wild stat-in-the-dark begins to look rather reasonable. Identity aside, ten per cent of the population, it seems, could well be involved in same sex behaviour after all.
